Antifungal drugs are used less frequently, but the most recent studies (from 2012) suggest these drugs aren't necessarily as effective for diverticulitis they might appear at first glance.
How Common is Diverticulitis?
When discussing the number of people with diverticulitis, some doctors will simply say that there is an "estimated 100,000 cases per year", whereas others will explain that there is no clear-cut "number" of people with diverticulitis because no hard measures have been proposed.
Most doctors estimate that about 20% of Americans over 20 years age have diverticulitis at any given time (a good rule-of-thumb that is often useful for diagnosing diverticulitis in adults and even teens with similar symptoms).
However, there is no absolute rule in this matter because symptoms and the incidence of diverticulitis can vary significantly from country to country.
One estimate put the national incidence around 1 for every 1-2 million citizens. Another suggested the number was around 10 or 20 for every 100,000 people.
Diverticulitis was thought to be more common in parts of Africa, South and Central America the Caribbean. However, recently, evidence indicates that the incidence may only be about 5% in Western Europe, Canada and the United States.
Diverticulitis is also a fairly common concern of children and teenagers, because with diverticulosis tend to be more common than other kinds of diverticulitis, such as diverticulitis the colon (usually due to Helicobacter pylori), while it is quite uncommon in children younger than 15 years old.
Diagnosing Diverticulitis
